Macular Degeneration can cause irreversible and blinding eye disease by attacking the center of the retina, which is the eye structure needed to see details such as reading words or recognizing faces.

There are two major types. Dry Macular Degeneration involves drusen, which are damaging deposits that form beneath the retina and cause retinal damage. The other major type is called Wet Macular Degeneration, in which bleeding and occurs below the retina and causes more rapid loss of vision.

A ground-breaking major study in 2001 involving macular degeneration vitamins was sponsored by the National Eye Institute - The Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). This important research proved, for the first time ever and beyond a shadow of a doubt, that supplements containing high levels of nutrients slowed and possibly even prevented the progression of macular degeneration.

But now there is new research showing that not only can vision be saved, vision can actually improve by adding additional nutrients to the AREDS Formulation.

The Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST) demonstrated visual improvement in patients taking specific high-dose supplements that include Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

Start with 25,000 IU (International Units) of beta-carotene. This is the form of Vitamin A that is safe and can be taken by anyone that hasn't smoked habitually. Add 500 milligrams of Vitamin C, also shown by AREDS to be critical. Besides helping to fight colds, Vitamin C is a terrific antioxidant when taken in super-high concentrations.

Take the 80 milligrams of Zinc Oxide recommended by AREDS and then reduce it by half? Why?
